O direito das pessoas com deficiência à educação, com garantia de acesso e permanência na escola comum, junto dos estudantes sem deficiência, é uma conquista recente no Brasil e em muitos países do mundo e, mais do que isso, um avanço que cotidianamente exige a dedicação dos movimentos de pessoas com deficiência e de outros grupos para que os progressos aconteçam e os retrocessos sejam superados. É com grande pesar que recebemos a notícia de que perdemos um importante aliado da defesa dos direitos humanos, o professor Thomas Hehir, da Universidade de Harvard (EUA).

Especialista em educação inclusiva, Hehir escreveu livros sobre o tema e advogou pelos direitos das pessoas com deficiência no sistema educacional dos Estados Unidos. Em 2016, coordenou uma pesquisa do Instituto Alana sobre os benefícios da educação inclusiva para estudantes com e sem deficiência. Também esteve presente no filme produzido pela Maria Farinha Filmes e a Rota 6, Um Lugar Para Todo Mundo.

“Thomas Hehir era uma das pessoas mais fáceis de amar que já conheci. Trabalhou incansavelmente para que as escolas sejam espaços para todas as crianças e adolescentes, e inspirou o Alana em diversas iniciativas pelo fortalecimento de uma educação que valorize as diferenças”, comenta Ana Lucia Villela, presidente do Alana.

Ele atribuía como um “grande fracasso” o fato de que muitos estudantes com deficiência ainda estejam estudando em ambientes segregados e, por todas suas realizações, deixa um legado que reforça o compromisso por uma profunda transformação nas escolas e nos currículos para que possam responder positivamente à diversidade dos alunos. Que sua trajetória seja um exemplo para aqueles que se empenham por uma sociedade em que ninguém seja deixado para trás.

The right of persons with disabilities to education, with guaranteed and permanent access in regular schools, sharing the same space with peer students without disabilities, is a recent achievement in Brazil and many countries worldwide. More than that, it is an advance that daily requires the commitment of the movements organized by persons with disabilities and other groups so that progress can be possible and the setbacks are here to be overcome. It is with great regret that we received the news that we lost an essential ally in defense of human rights, Professor Thomas Hehir, from Harvard University (USA).

“Thomas Hehir was one of the easiest people I have ever met to fall in love with. He worked tirelessly for schools to be the spaces for all children and adolescents. He was also an inspiration for us in Alana to carry out so many initiatives to strengthen an education that values the differences.”, remarks Ana Lúcia Villela, Alana Institute’s Instituto Alana’s president.

An expert in inclusive education, Professor Hehir has written books on the topic and advocated for the rights of all persons with disabilities in the U.S. Educational System. In 2016, he led a research project for the Alana Institute on the benefits of inclusive education for students with and without disabilities. He was also featured in the film “Forget Me Not.”, produced by Maria Farinha Filmes and Rota 6.  

He claimed as a “great failure” the fact that many students with disabilities are still receiving their education in segregated school settings. In the light of his accomplishments, his legacy is strong enough to strengthen the commitment to transform both schools and curricula so that they can respond positively to the students’ diversity issues. May his trajectory be an example to those striving for a society where no one is left behind.
